Being an Intern at RMHC of Richmond
“My name is Colleen Arthur and I am a senior at VCU. I am a double major in Political Science with a concentration in Human Security and Homeland Security. This summer I was an intern, but I started at RMHC of Richmond as a House Volunteer back in February.
As the Volunteer and Community Engagement Intern, I worked directly with Diana (the Volunteer and Community Engagement Manager) on a variety of different projects. This taught me so much about non-profit volunteer management. After this summer, I realized that the Ronald McDonald House Charities is a very volunteer supported organization. I learned so much about what goes into recruiting and retaining volunteers, as well as organizing the programs that RMHC does both inside the house and at the hospitals.
Their mission is to keep families close and provide families with a home away from home. Being able to help the staff and volunteers make sure we are able to keep up with that mission is inspiring. Running a non-profit is not easy, but the staff and volunteers here make it seem so effortless. Being a part of this organization was the most amazing way for me to spend my summer.”
