Ronald McDonald House Charities of Richmond Awarded $6,000 donation from Kroger
Contribution will help programs that increase access to food for families with sick or hospitalized children
Richmond, VA – (May 4, 2017) Ronald McDonald House Charities of Richmond is the recipient of a $6,000 contribution from Kroger Mid-Atlantic, which operates 18 stores throughout the Richmond Region and contributed $775,488.00 to communities served last year. This gift was made to support the operations of a new program, Lunches with Love, which provides lunches to parents of babies in the area’s hospital neonatal intensive care units (NICU). Additionally, the gift will support the Ronald McDonald House’s pantry needs for 2017.
“We are so grateful for this gift to provide operational support for our Lunches with Love Program,” said Kerry Blumberg, Executive Director of Ronald McDonald House Charities of Richmond. “Lunches with Love began when we were approached by the hospital about a need they were unable to fulfill for the caregivers in their Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Nurses and doctors noticed that families were spending long hours next to their baby’s bedside without taking the time to care for themselves by eating healthy meals. Lunches with Love delivers boxed lunches to these caregivers in the NICU at Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU and Bon Secours St. Mary’s Hospital. At Ronald McDonald House Charities of Richmond, we know that when a sick child’s family is taken care of, the family in turn is able to take better care of their child. In this case, the nurses and doctors are there to provide the best medical care for the baby, but they needed our help to take the best care of the parents so that they could be a strong support system.”
Volunteer groups come to the Ronald McDonald House four days a week to prepare and package meals for 15, providing the food and planning the menu. A Ronald McDonald House Charities of Richmond intern/staff member delivers the boxed lunches to the hospital NICUs. Funds from Kroger will help this program sustain and grow and support expenses related to preparation, packaging, and delivery of the lunches and ensuring we meet the hospital’s standards and best practices.
“We are always looking for unique ways to give back within the Richmond community,” said Allison McGee, spokesperson for Kroger Mid-Atlantic. “Partnering with Ronald McDonald House Charities of Richmond on their Lunches with Love program and providing ongoing support for the pantry are a natural way for us to contribute with our company-wide dedication to fighting hunger and improving lives within the communities we serve.”
In 2016, 3,120 lunches were delivered to area NICUs and the number is expected to double in 2017. Family members shared that the service meant they did not have to worry about buying food, packing lunches, or traveling to find food and that it gave them more time to focus on what mattered most: being their baby’s biggest cheerleader.
